Synopsis: The original title of this book is Benjamín Carrión: Pensamiento Fundamental. The book is a collection of the principal writings of one of Ecuador’s major cultural figures of the 20th century. Handelsman was responsible for the selection of the texts, the accompanying notes, and an introductory study; the book is part of a fifteen-book series devoted to the history of Basic Intellectual Thought in Ecuadorian history. Carrión insisted that small developing countries such as Ecuador could distinguish themselves through literature and the arts, and in 1944 he founded Ecuador’s House of Culture while convincing the national government to earmark a percentage of its gross national product to support this private cultural institution which will celebrate in August 2009 its 65th anniversary.
