Since World War II, most philosophers of science have purported the concept that science should be ‘value-free’. In Science, Policy and the Value-Free Ideal, Douglas argues that such an ideal is neither adequate nor desirable for science. She contends that the moral responsibilities of scientists require the consideration of values even at the heart of science.

Heather Douglas, associate professor of philosophy, has been recently elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Section Committee on History and Philosophy of Science. Douglas is a member of the interdisciplinary History and Philosophy of Science and Technology Colloquy at UT.

David Reidy, associate professor of philosophy, recently won a 2008 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Faculty Fellowship to support his work on an intellectual biography of political philosopher John Rawls. Reidy will spend the 2009-2010 academic year working as an NEH Fellow on the project.
