Carl Wagner, professor in the Department of Mathematics, recently presented the inaugural series of Masterclasses at the London School of Economics on his book, Rational Consensus in Science and Society, co-authored with the philosopher Keith Lehrer. Masterclasses, supported by a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council of the United Kingdom, feature lectures by authors of books of notable interest.

Michael Neilan, graduate student in mathematics, recently became the first UT awardee of a NSF Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. His research develops efficient numerical methods and algorithms for solving fully nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) that arise from various scientific and engineering applications.

Rachael Neilan, graduate student in mathematics, was recently featured in an issue of Nature magazine. The report focused on her mathematical modeling of cholera research. Neilan’s work is supported by the National Science Foundation and develops the first-ever methods for the best intervention strategies for cholera treatment.
