Gary Flandro, professor at the UT Space Institute, was recently awarded the General Henry H. “Hap” Arnold Award by the Tennessee section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for his research in combustion instability. He is credited with creating the Universal Combustion Device Stability (UCDS) process — an engineering tool used by NASA to mitigate vibration loads produced by thrusting rocket motors.

The work of three UT researchers was recently featured at the inaugural Tennessee Innovation Conference, sponsored by the Tennessee Technology Development Corporation (TTDC) in Nashville. Dayakar Penumadu, professor and interim head of the Civil & Environmental Engineering department; Jimmy Mays, professor and distinguished scientist in the Chemistry department; and Bill Hamel, professor and head of the Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering department, each demonstrated research projects with great potential for commercialization. The conference highlighted the value of state support of technology-based economic development initiatives.

Wes Hines, associate dean for research and technology in the College of Engineering, and adjunct assistant professors Brandon Rasmussen and David Holcomb in the department of Nuclear Engineering, were members of a panel of 17 experts who authored a recent International Atomic Energy Agency Report entitled “Online Monitoring for Improving Performance of Nuclear Power Plants Part 1: Instrument Channel Monitoring.”

Nuclear Engineering doctoral candidate Carley Harris was selected by the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) as a recipient of the ASTRO Resident Clinical Basic Science Research Award for her paper titled “A Novel Technique for Predicting which Head and Neck Patients will Require Adaptive Therapy.” She will present her research at ASTRO’s 50th annual meeting.
