Julie Reed

Julie Reed, assistant professor of history, has been awarded a year-long fellowship at the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University for the 2013-14 academic year.

Professor Reed’s current research examines the rise of social service institutions in the Cherokee Nation in the period after the Civil War. She examines why Cherokees adapted institutions as a means to deliver social services traditionally administered by clans and extended families and how those institutions were used to protect Cherokee sovereignty when allotment and Oklahoma statehood threatened.
